Under The Influence: Supertzar

Under the Influence: Supertzar

French power trio Supertzar stormed onto the heavy underground scene with the release of their debut album Epic Truths & Fantasies in late 2023. The album’s massive riffs, heavy groove, and warm, retro feel immediately caught my attention, and it went toward the top of favorite albums of the year right away, landing at number twenty on my final year-end list. Check out this unique and diverse list of influences, from Alice Cooper to ZZ Top, sent in by each member of the band.

ZZ Top - Eliminator

Eliminator

ZZ Top

This album is a big part of my childhood, in a way he made me as a musician at a time I wasn’t even thinking about playing any instrument . Also, those beards are great.

Electric Wizard - Come My Fanatics...

Come My Fanatics…

Electric Wizard

The lively Mark Greening grooves gives a special aura to this period, especially for this album. I surprise myself reproducing his gimmicks, even if I hardly try to not copying anyone. But Greening’s play has left such an impact on doom metal that I can’t get away from it, it’s stronger than me.

Led Zeppelin - II

Led Zeppelin

This is the album that really put me in bass playing. As I’ve played them over and over again for years now, I can say that there’s not a single riff that is boring or repetitive.

Jonas, bass
Om - Advaitic Songs

Advaitic Songs

OM

In OM, Al Cisneros shows that you can play very heavy and massive bass lines while being melodic and groovy. Which I wish I could do. “At Giza” is my favorite track from them, but the best album to me is Advaitic Songs, the orchestration, the multiple instruments, voices and samples gave another dimension to their music.

Jonas, bass
Alice Cooper - Welcome To My Nightmare

Welcome To My Nightmare

Alice Cooper

I don’t think folks are really aware of the impact of this album. Often we doom bands are referring to Black Sabbath, which is obvious. But this masterpiece, this opera, dramatically changed the game back in his days, and nothing would have been the same without it.

Bruno, guitars/vocals
YOB - The Great Cessation

The Great Cessation

YOB

Mike Scheidt is a living messiah, that’s it. When he sing or play, he seems to bear all the humanity’s grief. He’s stunning. Also his guitar sound is really unique. Cessation is not the most loved YOB release, but I got a strong nostalgia about it, the love i got for him is deep and personal, i can’t really explain but he shakes me every time since years and years.
